Travel + Leisure has named the Dwan Light Sanctuary at UWC-USA New Mexico’s most romantic destination, highlighting its remarkable interplay of art, architecture, and light. The sanctuary fills with shifting ribbons of color as sunlight passes through 12 prisms offering visitors a new way to see both the space and one another.
The sanctuary opened in 1996 as a generous gift from arts patron Virginia Dwan. Conceived by Dwan and designed with solar-spectrum artist Charles Ross and architect Laban Wingert, its geometry aligns with the sun, moon, and stars. For UWC-USA students and employees, it remains more than a romantic destination. For us it’s a quiet, light-filled place for reflection, renewal, and connection amid the intensity of campus life.
