UWC-USA is not a big community, so there’s always someone watching out; there’s always someone helping out. With many faculty and staff living on campus, students have many trusted adults—and peers—to turn to for support.
Residential Coordinators (RCs), trained in first aid and mental health assessment and response, and an Assistant RC live in each
residence hall. Schedules are staggered to ensure 24-hour on-call availability.
Students forge relationships with a diverse group of peers, sometimes with very different values. Peer Residential Advisors (RAs) provide leadership in the dorms around wellness, conflict transformation, sustainability, and IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility).
Students at UWC USA are assigned an faculty advisor and are part of a cohort of 7-8 advisees. The advisor is a regular source of support for students’ academic, social, experiential and residential experiences.
At the heart of the UWC ethos is respect for self and others in all circumstances–in both actions and words. We ask our students to think about the common good and to rise above their individual desires and needs. Discipline at UWC-USA emphasizes restorative over punitive practices. Only in specific cases is a purely disciplinary response taken.
Our values define our community. Not just words on a page, they guide our decisions and are exemplified by our daily actions.
All students are expected to abide by a set of Community Agreements while on campus and during school-related activities. Community agreements align with the UWC Movement Code of Conduct.
Students are responsible for using shared spaces considerately, performing scheduled dorm duties, and taking care of campus property.
When students want to get off campus they have opportunities to explore the beauty and culture of New Mexico, or spend a weekend with a local Get-Away family. All students participate in learing expeditions at various places in the region.
Offering place-based exploration and a sense of perspective, learning expeditions take place off campus, immersing students in real-world experiences that inspire curiosity and action.
New Mexico offers more than scenic beauty. The area has a rich history, with a culture infused with Spanish, Mexican and Native American influences.
Local families offer students an opportunity to get off campus for short stays to experience life in a typical US home.
