First-year United World College-USA students Ruta Rupeikyte of Lithuania and Joaquin Romero of Mora, N.M., have been nominated to the City of Las Vegas, N.M., Youth Commission.
In addition, second-year students Quinn Holden-Schrock of USA-Florida and Suvexa Pradhan Tuladhar of Nepal have been chosen as honorary founding members. Quinn and Suvexa have been leading the effort since the commission’s inception by doing proposal research, youth outreach, writing letters of support and more.
“They were grateful to have met with the mayor to share their youth commission vision,” said Loretta Abreu Martin, community liaison for the city. “Even though they will not be able to serve because they will be graduating soon, it would be great for the city to recognize their YC leadership efforts to date.”
Ruta and Joaquin’s duties will include advocating for youth events and making LV youth friendly; getting engaged in city issues; helping to recommend new programs and special events; craft initiatives in partnerships with other city boards and departments, local non-profits, and businesses; suggesting ideas for new policies or regulations for the city to consider; and being a voice for the Las Vegas youth community.
