Brien Darby, a graduate of UWC-USA in 2004, has become a pivotal figure in urban farming and sustainability efforts, aligning closely with the principles instilled during her time at UWC-USA. As the Executive Director of Cultivate KC, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting urban agriculture, Brien oversees multiple initiatives that address food security and environmental sustainability in Kansas City.
Under Brien’s leadership, Cultivate KC manages farms across different locations, including the Westport Commons Farm and Juniper Gardens Training Farm, totaling over 10 acres. These sites not only produce a diverse range of crops but also serve as educational hubs and community spaces. The Westport Commons Farm, strategically situated in Midtown KCMO, engages diverse communities through programs that educate about urban farming, climate change, and food insecurity.
One of Brien’s significant achievements has been expanding Cultivate KC’s impact despite challenges in land access and climate variability. She navigates these obstacles by advocating for urban green spaces and forging partnerships with local organizations and government bodies to secure land leases and support for sustainable farming practices.
Brien’s commitment extends beyond cultivation; she actively supports local farmers, including New Americans, by providing training and resources to enhance their agricultural skills. Her efforts have garnered community support, evident in the over 1,700 volunteer hours logged annually at Cultivate KC farms.
At a recent UWC-USA alumni event, Brien shared insights on sustainable agriculture, emphasizing its critical role in community resilience and environmental stewardship. Her work exemplifies the transformative impact of UWC-USA’s values: fostering leadership in sustainable development and equitable food access.
Through her ongoing contributions and advocacy, Brien Darby continues to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to building sustainable and inclusive food systems.
