Mudit Tyagi ’88: 2025 Alumni Impact Award Winner and Activist in Rural India

Alumni Mudit and his family.

Mudit is the founder of Akshara, an initiative based at MUWCI (UWC Mahindra College) that empowers rural youth through long-term educational and vocational support. Since 2005, Akshara has addressed deep inequities in rural India by equipping students with academic and life skills, enhancing teacher training, supporting girls' education, and encouraging career pathways beyond subsistence labor.

Akshara’s impact has been both practical and transformative: dropout rates for girls have dropped from over 40% to near zero, early marriage is less common, and caste barriers have softened. Parents now envision a future for their children that includes careers in engineering, law, IT, nonprofit leadership, and more.

Mudit’s journey from rural India to UWC-USA — and his commitment to ensuring that students from backgrounds like his believe they belong at places like UWC-USA — embodies the legacy of Giulio Regeni ’07, whose life’s work championed marginalized voices.

The Giulio Regeni Alumni Impact Award is given annually to UWC-USA alumnus or alumna who has made substantial contributions and created impact in the local, national or global community, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and professional career honor the UWC mission. A 2007 UWC-USA graduate, Guilio Regeni was brutally murdered nine years ago in Egypt.
