Community service is a fundamental element of the International Baccalaureate curriculum and UWC-USA students and faculty perform a cumulative 17,000 hours of community service in Las Vegas and San Miguel County every year.
Engaging with local communities, students develop their own local identity and a sense of how place shapes culture.
Addressing inequality, climate change, and polarization locally by working alongside others and learning from them.
Students learn to view problems as opportunities and that positive change starts with service.
Artistic practice fosters intercultural understanding, as well as poise and a sense of well-being and balance. From yearlong IB courses to casual evening activities, students have a range of ways to express themselves artistically.
Students lead all aspects of UWC-USA’s two annual productions, including show selection, casting, and directing, with support from theater faculty. They design costumes, manage the AV, and of course, perform.
UWC-USA hosts visiting artists each year for residencies in flamenco, hip hop, swing and other dance traditions. Performance opportunities for students abound, from Cultural Showcases to the annual Spring Dance Concert.
From the African Chorus to a variety of ensembles, students create music individually and in groups, and perform at regular Cultural Showcases, open mic nights, theater productions and other exhibitions.
The airy, light-filled visual art studio buzzes with students creating 2D and 3D art, both as an IB class and a co-curricular pursuit. The annual visual art exhibition, open to the public, is a highlight for the local community.
