PROGRAM
PHILOSOPHY
At the Bartos Institute, we believe that conflict is part
of the human condition. Though it is quite often destructive, positive
things have resulted from conflict. Engaging conflict constructively can lead to personal
growth, better relationships, and the genuine resolution of conflicts.
THE CONSTRUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT
OF CONFLICT (CEC)
The Constructive Engagement of Conflict (CEC) Program at UWC-USA constitutes the student-based portion of the Bartos
Institute.
This program seeks to assist students in developing skills in
facilitation, intercultural communication, peer mediation, community
based/action research, power analysis, strategy and campaign development,
budgeting and fundraising, and leveraging privilege for social change.
Students are encouraged to develop an analysis of local and global
issues and to practice their skills in a variety of settings, including
our campus and the Las Vegas area, and to identify ways they might
work in relationship to an organization active in their country
of origin.
Principles:
- Constructive Engagement of Conflict deals with campus, local, and home communities as well as global issues.
- Everyone can constructively engage in conflict, but everyone needs practice and training.
- Out of one-on-one and internal work come concepts and tools of community organizing.
- Such study will engender analysis and skills to understand privilege and power--and to do something about inequities.
