Francisco Ferreira '86

Francisco "Chico" Ferreira '86 was one of two Brazilian students in Montezuma's third graduating class. After graduation, Francisco spent a year back home in São Paulo, leading an adult literacy group in the Favela do Jaguaré, one of the city's many slums. This was followed by a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Economics at the London School of Economics, interrupted only by a year of teaching IB Economics at Pearson College.

Since finishing his Ph.D., Chico's career as been divided between the World Bank, where he is a Lead Research Economist, and the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where he was an Assistant Professor of Economics for three years, and where he tries to return as a visitor whenever he can. Chico has published a number of articles and books on the economics of poverty and inequality, and was one of the leaders of the team that produced the World Bank's World Development Report 2006, Equity and Development . Though currently based in Washington, he has remained engaged in the economics profession in Latin America, having served on the Board of the Latin American and Caribbean Economics Association, and currently serving as one of the editors of its journal, Economía . Chico is married to an Atlantic College alumna, and they have three boys, aged 1, 6, and 8.
